








A lot of homeowners focus on the finished patio - the furniture, the pergola, the string lights. But none of that matters if the foundation underneath isn't done right. That's exactly what this job was about. This homeowner had a backyard upgrade in the works, and they needed a solid concrete slab to build it on.
Here's what we were working with at the start - a basic grass backyard with just a small existing pad at the back door. Nothing close to the footprint this homeowner needed. We stripped everything down, staked out the layout with string lines, and got the ground prepped and graded before anything else happened. That step alone makes a bigger difference than most people realize. A poorly prepped base leads to cracking, settling, and headaches down the road.
Once the ground was ready, we set the wood forms to lock in the exact dimensions and laid down a full rebar grid across the entire slab area. That rebar is what gives the concrete its long-term strength - it keeps the slab from cracking apart under load or with ground movement. We also used a vapor barrier underneath before the pour, which helps protect the slab from moisture coming up through the soil.
The pour went smooth. After finishing and floating the surface flat, the forms stayed in place during the cure. What came out was a wide, clean concrete pad - level across the whole thing, with control joints cut in to manage any future cracking in a predictable way. The finished slab connects cleanly to the existing back door landing and gives this homeowner a serious amount of usable outdoor space to work with.
The difference between a concrete slab that lasts 30 years and one that starts breaking apart in 5 comes down to what happens before the concrete ever gets there. Proper grading, good forms, rebar reinforcement - that's the work that doesn't always show in the final photos but absolutely shows up over time.
