Here's what we were working with - a small covered patio with old tile that had gotten slippery over time. Not a great setup when you've got kids running in and out of the backyard. The homeowner wanted more usable space and a surface that was actually safe to walk on.
We pulled up the old tile, extended the slab out significantly, and curved the edge for a shape that flows naturally with the yard. That curved edge detail isn't just aesthetic - it gives the patio a finished, intentional look instead of a boxy concrete pad dropped behind a house.
Once the concrete cured, we came back and applied a spray deck coating over the entire surface. Spray deck is one of our favorite finishes for backyard patios. It bonds directly to the concrete, gives you a consistent texture that grips your feet even when wet, and ties everything together with a clean, uniform color. No grout lines, no individual tiles shifting or cracking over time. Just one solid, good-looking surface.
The finished patio is noticeably larger than what was there before. There's covered space right off the back door and an open area that extends out into the yard - plenty of room for outdoor furniture, a grill, and kids doing what kids do. The spray deck color ties in cleanly with the brick on the house too, which is always a win.
A patio like this does more than just look better. It adds functional square footage to your home and removes a real safety hazard at the same time. If you've got old tile out back that's seen better days, this kind of full replacement and coating is worth every bit of the investment.
